This piece depicts Adam and Eve, the original Celts, in the garden of Eden before the fall, which centuries later became the impetus for the Pelagian heresy controversy. The Judeo-Christian heritage is based on the concept of "original sin", i.e. the apple-eating affair. But in the early 400's AD St. Pelagius, a Celtic Catholic priest in Britain challenged this notion and proclaimed "original innocence", the atmosphere of the Garden prior to the intervention of the snake a condition not unlike the Buddhist doctrine of inherent enlightenment. |
