This piece demonstrates the way the medieval clergy (the few literate people of the times) incorporated Celtic forms into their illuminated documents. Instead of smelting and casting gold and silver, they applied metal leaf to their parchments. This design has a border 5 cells wide with niches for twelve shields, and other devices to produce a composite arrangement reminiscent of the English Letters Patent documents.
